James N. Smith

James grew up in Ojai, in Southern California playing tennis and swimming competitively. He attended Cate School in Carpinteria from 1977 to 1981. He then went to the University of Colorado, Boulder for two years and also spent a summer taking design classes at Berkeley. He then embarked on a Semester studying architecture in Copenhagen, Denmark. Upon return, he completed a 5 year professional degree in Architecture at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo.

His first work experiences were in Ventura and Ojai on custom residential projects.  Later, he spent time in Sacramento as a Director of Facilities Management for a large healthcare company. After designing medical projects throughout the U.S. for five years, James returned to a design firm in Sacramento where he worked on local and international commercial projects.

In 1999, James arrived on the Monterey Peninsula to pursue his first love of high-end Residential architecture. He worked for 5 years for a noted local firm before opening his own firm in 2004. James enjoys tennis, golf, sailing, wood-working and travel, among many other activities. He has been a P.G. Architectural Review Board member and sits on the Board of the P.G. Heritage Society.
